Self-Concept of College Students: Empirical Evidence from an Asian Setting
Individuals with high self-concept will likely have high life satisfaction, they easily get adjusted to life, and they communicate their feeling more appropriately. However, it was not certain whether self-concept would decline or improve as individuals age, or whether self-concept would vary between genders and ethnic groups. To prove, a study was carried out to compare the self-concept of college students in an Asian context. The inquiry utilized the cross-sectional design in finding out significant differences in the self-concept of participants in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity. A 22-item questionnaire was adapted and administered to 222 Bachelor of Public Administration and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration students from the satellite campus of Bukidnon State University in the Philippines. Initially, a sample was randomly drawn from the population. During the actual data collection, the researchers had difficulty getting the responses from the randomly selected individuals due to internet connection and it was done amidst a pandemic. Instead, it took all responses from those who were available, have access to the internet, and could accomplish the google forms. The data were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, T-test for independent sample, ANOVA and Post Hoc test. The results revealed that college students at the locale have a high level of self-concept in self-fulfillment, emotional adjustment, and honesty. Yet, they only had a moderate level of self-concept in autonomy. Further, there were significant differences in college students’ autonomy and honesty in terms of age and gender. Furthermore, there were significant differences in their emotional adjustment and self-fulfillment as to their ethnicity. The results have implications for instruction, administration, guidance services, and future research.
Competencies of Basic Education Teachers and Performance of Learners in the 2017-2018 National Achievement Test
The study determined the competencies of basic education teachers in the individual performance commitment ratings (IPCRs), the performance of learners in the 2017-2018 National Achievement Test (NAT), and identified the influence of teachers’ competencies on performance of learners. Using a descriptive-correlational and explanatory research designs, the study involved three divisions in Northern Mindanao. The study revealed that the Grade 10 and 6 teachers have possessed very satisfactory competencies across key result areas, while the Grade 10 and Grade 6 learners had a low mastery and very low mastery in the National Achievement Test, respectively. Thus, the learners had not acquired the competency standards of their curricula and were not ready to take the national examination. Further, results show that there is no significant relationship between the competencies of teachers and the performance of learners. Lastly, the competencies of teachers did not significantly influence the performance of learners. Hence, no matter how competent teachers are, this would not contribute significantly to improving the performance of learners in the national test. These results are contrary to the previous findings. There could be other factors that may influence learners’ performance but are not covered in the present study. Thus, teachers’ competencies cannot determine learners’ performance. As a response, several recommendations were articulated in this paper for policy consideration.
Scoping Review on Employability Skills of Teacher Education Graduates in the Philippines: A Framework for Curriculum Enhancement
The demand in the workplace is rapidly changing brought about by the educational reforms and the emergence of disruptive technology. The changes increase the importance of employability skills and literacy that would ensure career success and degree program relevance. On this premise, a study was carried out using a scoping review to examine the existing literature that published information related to employability skills of Teacher Education graduates in the Philippines. The review covered fifteen published articles that qualified in inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results revealed the top employable skills which include communication;, information, and communication technology; problem-solving and critical thinking; collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork; research; and leadership. This study offers these skills as a framework in the curriculum enhancement of teacher education programs. It was recommended to Teacher Education Institutions to revisit their curriculum and find out if these competencies were given considerable emphasis in instruction. The partially employable skills of graduates from teacher education programs imply the furtherance of the inquiry to confirm if these skills are employable or not. Future tracer studies may take the lens of the framework in evaluating the responsiveness of the curriculum.
